MAKING A THIN PAVING MORTAR
WITH

Proflex Primer® Flexible Epoxy
F1500 Clear / Primer to use with F1627 Hardener 2:1

Proflex Primer® is a two component, low viscosity, 100% solids flexible epoxy. Proflex Primer®'s slow curing so it allows for adequate working time.

Proflex Primer® can be mixed with sand (or aggregate) to create a mortar that is suitable for application over concrete, masonry, metal and wood. Proflex Primer® is colorless so the choice of sand or aggregate will determine the color effect that can be achieved.

MORTAR PREPARATION

One volume of Proflex Primer®  can be mixed with 3 to 4 volumes of sand or aggregate depending on particle size. A small sample should be prepared first in order to determine the exact ratio and workability properties. The sand or aggregate should be reasonably dry before mixing. Conventional mixers, screeds, and steel trowels can be used to work with epoxy mortars.

PROCEDURE:

Have all necessary materials and mixers staged before starting.

1) Mix Proflex Primer® part A with part B in a 5-gallon pail.

     a) Small batches

Add the predetermined (3-4 times epoxy volume) amount of aggregate to the pail in stages and mix with a mud mixer until mortar is uniform and has desired consistency.

b) Larger batches

Add pre-mixed Proflex Primer® to a cement mixer and add approximately Ľ of the sand or aggregate. Start the mixer rotating and slowly add remainder of the filler while mixer is rotating.

2) Transfer mortar to (previously prepared) surface to be coated and spread to desired thickness using a screed and steel trowel. Sprinkling paint thinner on top of mortar will make it easier to trowel.

3) Rope off the area for a 24-hour period until mortar has cured.

Using three different particle sizes of aggregate and then getting a tight packing with a steel trowel can achieve a smooth yet skid resistant finish.

Spreading Rate for 4 gallon of mortar mix (1gal. Proflex Primer® + 3 gal. Aggregate)*

1/8” Thick 50.0 sq.ft.
1/4" Thick 25.0 sq.ft.
1/2” Thick 12.5 sq.ft.
* Note: Reduce these spreading rates for rougher surfaces
